12 Months, 12 Goals: A New Take on New Year’s Resolutions

1 min read

You know, I used to really like New Year’s Resolutions… when I was little. But as amusing as they were, I’d never completed a “resolution”; most of mine were unrealistic which drove me to eventually stop trying (and caring). Instead, I began to just have a list of goals for myself for the year to come. This seemed to work out, but it’s been a casual list and I usually didn’t share ’em. (A few items on my lists from the past years have been: “lose weight”, “eat healthier”, “be more understanding”, “get better grades in your classes”.)

This year, I’ve decided to instead challenge myself with a goal every month. (This idea was partly inspired by Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Happiness Project.) Why am I doing this?

It’s simple: I’d like to focus on different aspects of myself this year in a more concrete and accountable way. (If you didn’t realize by now, I’m a very reflective person.) Each goal is attached to an overall improvement strategy I have for myself, which I am planning to elaborate on when I blog about my progress each month. I made sure my goals were realistic, but still challenging and I am really excited! In addition to these 12 goals, 2012 is going to be a big year for me personally so I am welcoming it with open arms!!

Happy New Year to you and yours!

Reflective Question: What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to “resolutions”?

What do you think?

This is a REALLY great idea. I already made my resolutions / goals for the year, but I might try to sneak some of these in!  Having something to focus on every month is great! Can’t wait to see your daily blog posts and pictures!

Thanks! It’s keeping me excited about every goal/month. Let me know what you decide to do 🙂

I’m excited for the daily blogging/photos, too! Mostly because I know they are going to be really challenging!

That’s a great idea, Maria! April, October and December would be tough for me!

When I look at it, I realize how tough all of these will be for me! (Which was really the point!) I know I’m going to feel SO GOOD when I accomplish these!

Isn’t it?! It’s become one of my favourites and I keep reading it over and over. Any other books like it you’ve read?
